The Arab-based World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY) established its Southern Africa Office in January 2001 in Durban.
OBJECTIVES
To be involved in the areas of dawah (calling to Islam), women and youth.
WAMY adopted a partnership approach with local organisations or communities for the establishment of projects.
PROJECTS
Umlazi Islamic Centre in a local township. This includes a pre-school, Clinic, adult classes, Madresa and Hifz classes.
Rural boarding schools.
Dawah Academy. Established with As Salaam and now with SANZAF. Offers 3 year course in Arabic, Islamic and skills studies.
Orphanages.
Tuition Centres for Grade 11 and 12 learners.
12 home or school-based Madresas with 700 students.
Youth Leadership Adventures.
Youth Camps for high school and University students.
A youth centre is planned with an indoor sports centre.
Montessori pre-schools.
University bursaries.
Help with school uniforms and fees for poor learners.
