Arty Arabesque

The three elements of Islamic art are: Arabesque, geometric patterns, and Arabic calligraphy (geometry of writing). These elements unify Islamic art across all areas and times.

Islamic art is often associated with the Arabesque style. In the Qur’aan there are many references to the beauty of nature. This beauty is reproduced on plates, vases and other objects with intricate patterns of interlaced lines. When flowers, fruits or foliage are placed in a spiral, abstract and geometric pattern, the art is called Arabesque.

Arabesque, usually found decorating the walls of mosques, is an elaborate application of repeating geometric forms that often echo the forms of plants and animals.

Arabesque can be equally thought of as both art and science. The artwork is at the same time mathematically precise, aesthetically pleasing, and symbolic.
