GIFTS AND THE PROPHET sallallahu alaihi wa sallam
People used to give gifts to the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam and he used to also give gifts. The hadith mentions that the mutual giving of gifts increases love.

Some gifts given to the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam: a wooden bed, 2 pairs of leather socks, a perfume container with perfume, a glass utensil, a mirror, a comb, a mule, a decorated Syrian sheet and a sword. He was also given food as gifts such as roasted goat meat and milk.
Some gifts that the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa salam gave to others: an Asa (stick for walking), silken clothing which he instructed the Sahaaba to give to their wives, grapes, and a mule.
Once a lady gave him a bunch of dates and striped cucumbers and he gave her gold jewellery in return.
Non-Muslim kings also sent gifts: Among them was the King of Alexander (Egypt), the King of the Coptics and the Emperor of Rome.
The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam used to accept gifts and give the giver something in return. Thus, to replace a gift with another is Sunnah.
In the next issue, we will highlight some more noble features of the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam). [Ash-Shamaail al-Kubra Volume Three]
