Allah nominated the story of Yusuf (alaihis salaam) from the entire book of Guidance, the Qur’aan, for the title of Most Beautiful of Stories. In it are many messages for those who search for the truth. (Qur’aan 12:7) Here are some of those messages:
When word spread that the wife of the Aziz tried to seduce Yusuf (alaihis salaam), the women of the town looked down on her for being enchanted with a slave. With her reputation in pieces, she invited them for a meal and while they were holding knives, she instructed Yusuf (alaihis salaam) to appear before them. So captivated were they with his handsomeness that they cut their fingers off, his beauty playing havoc with their minds, saying: Allah save us! This is no mortal man. This is but an angel. They lost their fingers, we may lose our lives through AIDS, the scourge of promiscuity and illict sexual relations.
Then it occurred to them after they had seen all the signs (proving his innocence) to imprison him for a time. Yusuf (alaihis salaam) was imprisoned not because he was guilty, but because he had stood up for a pure lifestyle. This is not the first time that the innocent was sent to prison for the guilt of the guilty. Yet this oppression might plant the seeds of Islam’s resurgence. The first prisoners brought to our shores were Muslims, their imprisonment planting the seeds of Islam here.
