FRIENDS CHECKLIST: COOL OR FOOL?

Are your friends worth it? Use this list to find out:

Does he/she help you become a better person? The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam likened the company of a sincere friend to visiting a perfume seller. Everytime you visit his shop you benefit: either he’ll give you some as a gift, or you’ll buy some, or at the very least you obtain a beautiful fragrance from his company. (Bukhari)

Is he/she like a mirror to you? The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said that a Believer is like a mirror to other Believers. Like a mirror, your friend gives you an honest image. He/she forgives your mistakes but does not exaggerate your strengths or weaknesses.

Do his/her manners and lifestyle remind you of Allah? Once the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam was asked who can be a best friend. He replied: “He who helps you remember Allah, and reminds you when you forget Him.”

Do you feel comfortable and secure in his/her presence? If your friend’s company makes you feel guilty about the good that you do or the piety that is Islam, you must qeustion the benefit of this relationship. Remember the wise saying: “Being alone is better than having an evil companion, and having a sincere companion is better than being alone.”

Does he/she love you for the sake of Allah? Friendship whithers over time if not built for the right reason. Friendship built on Islamic principles is sincere and everlasting, even beyond death: “Friends shall be enemies of each other on the Day of Judgement, except for those who were God-fearing.” [Qur’aan] Z Young Muslims Canada
